CARBON OFFSET FUND

What is Carbon Neutral?

Desertification, one of the greatest environmental challenges, is exacerbated by climate change just as climate change is exacerbated by desertification, In addition, communities living in drylands affected by desertification and land degradation are more exposed to menace on account of climate change. A greenhouse gas is considered a main cause of climate change today. Carbon neutral, or carbon neutrality, means to remove as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it is released. As a part of carbon neutral efforts, many international conferences are now trying to be entirely or partially carbon neutral.

Voluntary Carbon Offset Fund in the UNCCD COP10

To compensate for greenhouse gases and other emissions arising from the 10th UNCCD conference, voluntary contributions from the UNCCD members and partners are actively collected by the Korea Forest Service (KFS) and Gyeongnam Provincial Government. Air travel to and from Changwon is probably the most significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission associated with the conference. The contributions will be, therefore, estimated of average GHG emissions both onsite and arising from return travel to Changwon from different parts of the world. All voluntary contributions will go towards the Green Fund and will be invested in credible, sustainable, and additional offset afforestation projects offered by the Korea Green Promotion Agency. Participants who make a voluntary purchase of an offset during the conference will receive a soft-copy certificate of participation via e-mail and a gift.

About 'Korea-Mongolia Greenbelt Project'

KMGP was established on Mar. 24, 2007 on the basis of the agreement on KMGP at Korea-Mongolia Summit on Mar. 24, 2007. KMGP is aiming to run for 10 years from 2007 to 2016 with its main tasks, such as afforestation to combat desertification, capacity building, and joint R&D projects. Its main projects sites are 'Lun Som' and 'Dalanzadgad Som' located 125km and 580km away from Ulaanbaatar.
